Like many enterprises, the company invested heavily in cloud security. They spent over 18 months implementing it and remediating issues found across major cloud providers. From a practical standpoint, the thinking was straightforward: security had been addressed, so cloud risk should largely be under control.

In that context, running another platform felt more like a validation step than a discovery exercise. There was confidence that governance issues, especially meaningful ones, would already be surfaced. What became clear is that security visibility alone doesn’t equal cloud governance clarity.

• Cloud security was “done”, or so it seemed : The company had invested heavily in cloud security, spending close to a year implementing it across major cloud providers. The assumption was that cloud risk should largely be under control. 

• Security visibility isn’t governance clarity : Security tools surface vulnerabilities, misconfigurations and access risks, but they aren’t designed to fully cover inventory and architecture, configuration drift, cost visibility, or alignment between policy, architecture and execution.

• Complexity was outpacing security : Cloud complexity can scale faster than detection based security tools. Capacity was capped by the team. unused assets, sprawl and idle resources quietly accumulated, costing money and leaving unmonitored attack surface, while confidence in the cloud posture stayed high.

• Disconnected tools hid the whole system : With architecture, cost, drift and policy each viewed their own tools, blind spots emerged.
